Our Paramount therapy team consists of myself; Stacey Lowe. PTA; Lynn Hollins, PTA; Lindey Workman, OT; and Annie Brady, COTA. All have experience in neuro rehab and are a dedicated team of professionals with an eye for detail and hearts of gold. They are the heart and soul of this team.
As I initiated my employment at Paramount, I immediately identified the need for residents to be in appropriate seating and positioning. Poor skin integrity with rising percentages of pressure-related ulcers, ever-increasing musculoskeletal deformity and pain levels on the rise were the challenges we faced. Our Milestone DOR cluster partners agreed there was a need. We immediately went to work with my initiative to establish best practices for seating and positioning and place all appropriate residents in custom wheelchairs.
CEU Education by Quantum
In the Saint Joseph’s Villa Therapy Department on March 24, Quantum conducted a free two-hour continuing education course. Our goal was to provide quality education and training in order to establish best-practice protocols within our buildings. (photo) In collaboration with local reps, we were able to access the Quantum Education Network. This course focused on evaluation and documentation for power seating and base selection. Therapy staffs were introduced to cutting edge technology. The program also addressed major insurance qualifications.
The outcomes were an increased awareness by therapists and a further commitment to improve quality of life for the residents. Overall, there was an increased ability to appropriately evaluate both long-term and skilled patients. The two hours translated into 20 free CEU hours for the therapists in our cluster.
Paramount has documented improvement in skin integrity, decreased pain and overall quality of life. Patients now have renewed independence and ability to access their environment with significantly less pain or discomfort.
In the future, we believe there are untapped resources to provide advanced training for our staff. These courses allow clusters to ensure they are utilizing best-practice protocols, while exposing staff to the latest market products. Enhancing staff education and sharpening skills will ultimately enhance our quality of care.
